The quantum landscape in Australia

Sydney Quantum Academy undertook a market research study of Australia’s quantum industry to gain insights into the quantum landscape today and understand the sector’s anticipated skills and workforce requirements.

This study, conducted by Snapcracker Research + Strategy between December 2021 and March 2022, undertook both qualitative and quantitative research, including 15 in-depth interviews with several people at key organisations, both potential quantum users as well as quantum technology providers. A further 23 organisations provided confidential qualitative input via surveys.

The qualitative component included representatives from large corporations, small to medium enterprises, Federal Government departments and agencies, State Government departments and agencies, independent research organisations, industry associations, start- ups, consultancies, and non-government organisations such as industry associations.

The quantitative sample included representatives from aerospace and aviation; banking, financial services and insurance; business services and consulting; chemicals; education and training; energy, resources and utilities; government; health, medical and life sciences; information technology (IT); logistics; quantum technologies; science and research; telecommunications; and travel and transportation.

Respondents were based in New South Wales, ACT, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, Northern Territory as well as local representatives of companies in Austria, Canada and India.

A public version of the report, known as the National Quantum Industry And Workforce Development Review, was published by SQA in November 2023 and is available to download below.

The study has been approved by the University of Sydney Human Research Ethics Committee (2021/834).
