In the latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject 2026 (THE 2026), Sydney Quantum Academy’s partner universities once again demonstrated their collective strength across quantum disciplines.  

All four SQA partner universities were ranked in the top 10 percent of global institutions for disciplines that underpin quantum, including engineering, computer science and physical sciences. 

The prestigious THE subject rankings assess nearly 1,600 research-intensive universities in 109 countries across 11 subject areas. The rankings consider metrics including teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry engagement, using performance indicators such as citations, industry income, and learning environment. 

Australia offers a rare, end‑to‑end environment for quantum education and research, combining world‑class fundamentals, engineering capability, computational expertise, and a connected ecosystem. Strength across the disciplines that underpin quantum

Engineering plays a central role in the development of quantum hardware, devices, and scalable systems. Australian universities performed strongly in engineering overall in the 2026 rankings, with SQA partner universities all amongst the top 175 globally.  

Computer Science  

Computer Science underpins quantum algorithms, software, control systems, and hybrid classical–quantum approaches.  The latest rankings place SQA partner universities amongst the world’s top institutions for computer science, with strong results amongst the top 175 university’s globally reflecting system-wide computational capability.  

Physical Sciences 

Physical sciences provide the theoretical backbone of quantum research, spanning physics, chemistry, mathematics, and related fields. SQA’s partner universities once again rank within the global top 175 in these fields. 

Australia’s strong performance in all of these areas gives access to advanced laboratories, fabrication facilities, and system-level research environments, allowing students to engage directly with the practical challenges of developing quantum technologies – all essential components of preparing for the quantum roles of the future.
